Autumn/Winter is my favourite time to read.
The dark nights and the cold weather make snuggling up with a good book a great
idea for lonely evenings. Therefore I thought I would share with you some of
the great books I have read recently. I
will just include a brief intro about the story, as I don’t want to give
anything away.
Dangerous Girls - Abigail Haas
(Incredible, fast
paced, and some truly new)
It's Spring Break of senior year. Anna, her boyfriend Tate, her best
friend Elise, and a few other close friends are off to a debaucherous trip to
Aruba that promises to be the time of their lives. But when Elise is found
brutally murdered, Anna finds herself trapped in a country not her own,
fighting against vile and contemptuous accusations.
As Anna sets out to find her friend's killer; she discovers hard truths
about her friendships, the slippery nature of truth, and the ache of young
love.
As she awaits the judge's decree, it becomes clear that everyone around
her thinks she is not just guilty, but dangerous. When the truth comes out, it
is more shocking than one could ever imagine...
Crow's Row - Julie Hockley
(CAUTION – NOT FOR
YOUNG READERS OR THE FAINT HEARTED)
For college student Emily Sheppard, the thought of spending a summer
alone in New York is much more preferable than spending it in France with her
parents. Just completing her freshman year at Callister University, Emily faces
a quiet summer in the city slums, supporting herself by working at the campus
library. During one of her jogs through the nearby cemetery while visiting her
brother Bill's grave, Emily witnesses a brutal killing-and then she blacks out.
When Emily regains consciousness, she realises a young crime boss and his gang
have kidnapped her. She is hurled into a secret underworld, wondering why she is
still alive and for how long.
Held captive in rural Vermont, she tries to make sense of her situation
and what it means. While uncovering secrets about her brother and his untimely
death, Emily falls in love with her very rich and very dangerous captor,
twenty-six year- old Cameron. She understands it's a forbidden love and one
that won't allow her to return to her previous life. But love may not be enough
to save Emily when no one even knows she is missing.
Cinder - Marissa Meyer
(BEST SERIES I HAVE
READ FOR A WHILE!)
Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly
plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless lunar people watch,
waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth’s fate hinges on one girl.
Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen
with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her
stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome
Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the centre of an intergalactic
struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty
and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her
world’s future.
The Cellar - Natasha Preston
(CAUTION – NOT FOR
YOUNG READERS OR THE FAINT HEARTED)
When sixteen-year-old Summer Robinson goes missing one night, her
family, friends and boyfriend are devastated. Nothing ever happens in Long
Thorpe, so the disappearance of a schoolgirl shocks the whole community. The
police waste no time in launching a search and investigation, but with nothing
to go on and no trace of Summer, hopes of finding her quickly fade.
Colin Brown, is a thirty-year-old solicitor living alone after the death
of his mother. He suffered a traumatic and abusive childhood, and is left with
no sense of right or wrong. Desperate for the perfect family, Colin, referring
to himself as Clover, turns to drastic measures to get what he wants.
Say Her Name - James Dawson
(Great for Halloween)
Roberta 'Bobbie' Rowe is not the kind of person who believes in ghosts.
A Halloween dare at her ridiculously spooky boarding school is no big deal,
especially when her best friend Naya and cute local boy Caine agree to join in
too. They are ordered to summon the legendary ghost of 'Bloody Mary': say her
name five times in front of a candlelit mirror, and she shall appear... But,
surprise surprise, nothing happens. Or does it?
Next morning, Bobbie finds a message on her bathroom mirror... five
days... but what does it mean? And who left it there? Things get increasingly
weird and more terrifying for Bobbie and Naya, until it becomes all too clear
that Bloody Mary was indeed called from the afterlife that night, and she is
definitely not a friendly ghost. Bobbie, Naya and Caine are now in a race
against time before their five days are up and Mary comes for them, as she has
come for countless others before... A truly spine-chilling yet witty horror
from shortlisted 'Queen of Teen' author James Dawson.
Dorothy Must Die - Danielle Paige
(Fantastic and truly
unexpected)
I didn't ask for any of this. I didn't ask to be some
kind of hero.
But when a tornado—taking you with it, sweeps up your whole life—you
have no choice but to go along, you know?
Sure, I've read the books. I've seen the movies. I know the song about
the rainbow and the happy little blue birds. But I never expected Oz to look
like this. To be a place where Good Witches can't be trusted, Wicked Witches
may just be the good guys, and winged monkeys can be executed for acts of
rebellion. There's still the yellow brick road, though—but even that's
crumbling.
What happened? Dorothy.
They say she found a way to come back to Oz. They say she seized power
and the power went to her head. And now no one is safe.
My name is Amy Gumm—and I'm the other girl from
Kansas.
The Revolutionary Order of the Wicked has recruited me.
I've been trained to fight.
And I have a mission.
Do you recommend any great books for me to
try?
